However, Roopa is saved by Shankar and Kishan.

With no option, Roopa travels with them, and she tries to escape, but returns when chased by the gang and Surendra Pratap Singh who tries to rape her. Kishan decides to make Roopa the heroine of their dance show, however, Shankar warns him that Roopa will bring them in trouble.

When Kishan meets Roopa for the first time, he is smitten by her beauty and falls in love with her. Kishan works with his best friend, truck driver, Shankar ( Faisal Khan). Destiny has other plans as Roopa survives and she steals the clothes of Kishan ( Aamir Khan), a theatre actor.

Enraged, Roopa attempts to commit suicide by jumping into a waterfall as she finds it better to kill herself rather than be a mistress. Gujjar threatens Roopa that she will only be his mistress and will never be able to have a brother nor lover. Roopa, enraged by the fact that Ram and Gopal are no more, vows vengeance. Also, her best friend, Gopal ( Master Om Kapoor), is killed too, much to the dismay of Gopal's mother ( Tanvi Azmi) who tried to prevent her son from rescuing Roopa (due to his young age) which is what led Gujjar to kill him. However, as Gujjar attempts to escape with the terrified Roopa, Ram comes to her rescue, only to be slain, much to the horror of the village, especially Roopa. The leader of the terrorists, Gujjar, (Tinu Verma), murders a visiting politician, and to make matters worse, Roopa's beauty catches the eye of Gujjar. A festival is arranged in the happiness of Roopa's marriage, however Chandanpur's happiness is short-lived, as the village is raided by a group of terrorists. The only soldier brother called Ram Singh ( Ayub Khan) of a young woman, Roopa ( Twinkle Khanna), returns to Chandanpur village to arrange her marriage. The Panchayat watch in fascination when Kanhaiya buys the land, a move that will put him in direct conflict with Shakti. Shakti will not permit anyone to plow his land as he believes that his evil paternal uncle forged documents to make him the owner, and he blames himself for losing his brother, Kishan, during a Mela 20 years ago. There are three men who challenge their authority, namely Bansilal, who is a low-caste Baniya but wants to marry Billoo, who is a Brahman New-comer to the village, Kanhaiya, who is in love with Lajjo Choudhry, but is refused permission as no one is aware what is caste is, and to make matters worse, has been brought by a Muslim woman and finally there is Shakti Singh - a dreaded bandit - who will not permit any daughter of the Panchs to get married as his sweetheart, Santho, was sexually assaulted and killed by Thakur.

Synopsis In rural India a small village is ruled by a Panchayat, a group of right-wing Hindu men who run the lives of the villagers dictatorially.
